Bicycle Front Light
As a road user, would you find these things useful on a bicycle in front of or behind you?
I use brake light and front and rear indicators on my bicycle when cycling in London, especially at night. I feel that drivers interact with my indicators properly – i.e., they realise that I’m about to turn left when I use the left indicator.
But do you think this might be irritating? – I only use them for fun, and for convenience… I’m also a driver so with my driver hat on, I would love to see cyclists using indicators instead of arm signalling at night…

- I tend to use flashing red light so that drivers behind me can tell that it’s a bike
- I think the speed isn’t a major issue since you’d hope that the driver can see the pedal reflectors too
- I only use rechargeable batteries – not a major cost
The advantage of turn indicators is that they are visible even when drivers forget to turn on their headlights (see it all the time), the disadvantage is that they are too close together to really be told apart by the drivers. If you do use indicators, you should still use hand signals (many gloves have reflective material for that reason).
I use DiNotte LED lights since they’re rechargeable and very visible (even in daylight). The biggest problem is that drivers often don’t notice cyclists (no matter how many lights you use) so you can only do your best to be visible but still ride like you’re invisible. Watch for drivers since they’re probably not watching for you (texting, applying make-up, etc). If being “irritating” is the only way to be sure to be seen, I say go for it.
